Campbell's advice: Turn up heat

Liz Campbell has some advice for runners who want to increase flexibility or speed up their recovery from
the constant pounding of cross-country training.

Join her once a week to practice yoga in a 110-degree steam room.

"It's a big reason why I'm running so well," said the junior at Mount St. Mary of Watchung. "You might feel horrible in the
room because it's so hot, but when you get out you feel so loose. And the next day you feel amazing."

Campbell, a resident of Colonia, attends a class called Funky
Hot Yoga once a week in Woodbridge. She says
she's proof that turning up the heat works.

Campbell placed second in the E race at the Shore Coaches Invitational at Holmdel Park on Oct. 7. Her time of 19:37 is
nearly a minute faster than her previous course best, when she placed 82nd at the 2005 NJSIAA Meet of Champions.

She ran 15:19.7 over 2.5 miles, a personal best by 1:13, to place third in the Manhattan Invitational F Division race at
Van Cortlandt Park in the Bronx last Saturday. It was the sixth-fastest New Jersey time in seven races.

Campbell said she has taken her training more seriously this season and that dedication began with logging 45 miles a
week this summer. But a friend told her about the yoga class early this fall and Campbell hasn't missed one since.

"I have really tight hamstrings and I never feel flexible enough," Campbell said. "I won't miss class now. I feel so much
better compared to last year at this time."
